What a show from the Joy Division/New Order bassist and his band, The Light!
Starting with a New Order set which included The Him and Dreams Never End from MOVEMENT, they finished the short New Order set with the classics Regret and True Faith…
That set the tone for the evening, and then it was down to business as Peter Hook and the Light played both Joy Division albums in full, Unknown Pleasures, and Closer. Two very different albums, but both classics in their own right. Day of The Lords, Shadowplay, Interzone, and a slightly faster New Dawn Fades were the highlights for me, from the rocky, punk debut album from Joy Division. Then on to the poignant Closer, with its collection of taut, dark, passionate songs. I’ve always treasured Isolation and Twenty Four Hours, but The Eternal was mesmerizing on the night, and is the stand out album track for me.
Finishing with 4 Joy Division Tracks, These Days , the B-Side to Love Will Tear Us Apart, and Ceremony written by Joy Division, released by New Order, Hooky and his excellent band finished with a forceful Transmission, and a rocking Love Will Tear Us Apart, including a raucous, rowdy singalong by everyone in the Olympia. The song is now a rock anthem when played by The Light, but will still have a sad melancholy for me when I hear it on record.
Top night and highly recommend show. Make sure to catch Peter Hook and The Light as they are sure to retun to Dublin again…
